The Classical Academic Style of painting is an exacting scientific approach to art, and portraits created using this method achieve a wonderful realism and luminosity.  The following photos briefly describe this classical approach:

 

The drawing is meticulously drawn using a graph to allow precise transfer to the board. The drawing is transferred to the board using the graph as reference, and then inked in. Areas where highlights are desired are built up with gesso and sculpted.
The drawing is carefully fleshed out in charcoal to determine values. The charcoal drawing then becomes part of the base gray-green underpainting. When the underpainting is "perfect", color is applied matching values.
